Feather Earring, a Hunkpapa Sioux warrior and follower of Sitting Bull in 1876, fought under Chief Crow King at the Battle of the little Big Horn. Fighting mad after his brother Dog-With-Horns was killed early in the battle, he was never sure how many soldiers he shot down in retaliation, but convinced it was many, so many that he ran low of bullets and had to call on a young Sioux with a bow and arrow to finish off a wounded trooper he found ‘playing possum.’
“If Reno or Long Hair (Custer) had talked peace with us then, we’d all agreed to surrender and do what the soldiers wanted.” – Standing Rock Reservation, SD 1941
